why we've chosen to separate the legal from the actual union
From the State of Michigan marriage license guidelines.
The Good:
"The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men. Marriage is one of the 'basic civil rights of man,' fundamental to our very existence and survival. "
Exactly. So why can't my favorite men marry each other?
The Bad:
"Michigan law allows marriage without parental consent at age 18; with parental (or legal guardian) written consent at age 16; and with parental consent and probate court permission at ages under 16."
UNDER sixteen? What the hell kind of backwoods is this? Hey mom, can you drive us to the courthouse?
The Ugly:
"No ... person who has been afflicted with syphilis or gonorrhea and has not been cured of the same, shall be capable of contracting marriage."
I think in this instance "contracting marriage" was poor verb choice. And does the county clerk really have to police this? Add that to the list of 100 Worst Jobs.

on my last trip to michigan, i had the proper inoculations for syphillis and gonorrhea. i didn't think i'd need anything more. then i got back to new york and realized i contracted marriage. fwcdj! (that's the word verification, and oddly, exactly what i said when i figured out that it was marriage that left me feeling sore, achy and lethargic. thankfully, there was no discharge.)
Can you get married if you have the HIV or herpes then? I'm not sure if I'd be more upset if I contracted gonorrhea or marriage.
