in this house that i call home
the island of mallorca: a beautiful and amazing place, if you can avoid the swarming german tourists. seriously, most signage was in spanish and german. thank god it was the off season.
beaches and outposts; rocks and sand. apparently, in the past the island was invaded so often there are all these old moorish stone lookout towers along the coast. since, some have been replaced by the modern, peacetime version.

the way to avoid the tourists is to rent a little smart car and drive around the island. it's only 50 km by 50 km or so, and you can drive from the beach to the mountains in less than a half hour.

getting up the mountains takes a little longer. switchbacks so tight you just pray no one is coming the other way because you can't turn your neck far enough to see around it.

staying in one of these ancient stone houses makes you seriously contemplate your job options. the walls of these places are almost a meter thick. the walls in my house are about a quarter of that.

the pharmacy signs also like to promote a martini culture and, perhaps, the medicinal qualities of gin.

as often happens abroad, i occasionally felt the need to hide my nationality.

and that's just mallorca. more later on madrid.
