full disclosure: I work for a japanese company. so, we often have visitors from japan and, befitting their culture, they almost always bring some sort of gift for our office. this gift is usually in edible form. the trick is knowing whether the little individually-packaged "treats" are sweet or not. it's always a unique surprise.
the ones that aren't sweet are usually fish/sea flavored in some fashion, but often you have to bite into one to know. these weren't so difficult. as you can see, it's a shrimp cracker.
no, literally: it's a flattened shrimp baked into a cracker.
eyes and all, not so bad. mildly fishy and salty. if you've been to japan, you get used to this sort of thing. yummy!
my boss (also japanese) thinks sucking the brains from various sea creatures is a delicacy. he says that americans like the parts of the fish that have the least flavor, whereas he likes the parts with the most flavor.

personally, i don't really enjoy food until it's flattened and baked.

i once got a fried shrimp/crayfish thing with my sushi once. i wasn't sure whether to eat it or let it remain as a garnish. now i'm thinking it was edible.
yeah...sometimes when you get shrimp tempura they ask you if you want the heads fried. I tried it once; a little too crunchy and tentacley for my taste.
Here in New Orleans it's standard procedure to "suck the heads" of boiled crawfish. Sucking "the heads" is, of course, really just sucking out the brains and their associated juices. It really is quite tasty.
