Josh pointed to a good article in Slate regarding the lack of outrage and right-wing backlash regarding the recent passages of gay marriage laws.
To me it says what has been nagging me (and many others) for a long time: the news media care more about the radicals than the mainstream. They cover the 5% of nutjobs as opposed to the boring median voter. Maybe the average person in the U.S. is still a little unsettled about gay marriage, but more than likely they don't care all that much. And it seems they're caring less and less as gay marriages happen quietly and there isn't suddenly a man having sex with a donkey in their front yard like Pat Robertson promised. It's like Y2K all over again, except with less bottled water.
So are there still people railing over this? I'm sure there are. But when we stop listening to the 5%, we can move on. The power of the voice is so potent that people forget it only takes one dictator to lead a nation of millions, and a chorus of 5% can sway the nation when amplified by the megaphone of the media.
In summary: the non-story of gay marriage progressing slowly but steadily is probably the best thing that could have happened. Prejudice goes out not with a bang but a squeak.

Nice post. Of course, living in Iowa, there has been a lot of talk about it. But not really all that much protest. it's more like people are amazed that IOWANS passed it, but not that it got passed in general.
