disconnected parts of a benevolent robbery

last weekend was a whirlwind of friends and family, in all the best ways.

brian rolled into town friday--I got he and katie tipsy and we went to see this django-ish gypsy jazz band at cliff bell's in detroit. Bloody fantastic, aside from only having a camera phone for pictures.

Sadly, my little camera was still out of commission since Japan, and it apparently had a suicide pact with Brian's camera because his did the EXACT SAME THING right before our eyes.

two dead cameras

So, he stayed for waffles in the morning and then had to head north (to East China) to see family, and we drove out to Jackson to do the same. We had crazy 1960s Betty Crocker dinner with my family, complete with multiple "salads" containing at least two of the following: mini marshmallows, mandarin oranges, jello, and shredded coconut. It's always an adventure. We left there around 7pm and decided on the fly to go visit our dear friend Heather at her lakeside cottage, which we'd never yet seen. She, being fantastic, was more than accomodating to some late night guests, whipping up some mulled wine (sans sulfites) and freshly warming chocolate cake. After a winding trip down many dark rural roads, we found her cozy spot by the lake and spent until the wee hours doing all sorts of activities and consuming all manner of food and drink. She tells it better than I.

We awoke on five hours sleep to drive straight to Royal Oak to have teppanyaki with more friends. Mmm....stir fry for breakfast. After japanese brunch we suddenly found ourselves with nothing to do. We headed home and began cleaning up the explosion that was our house. And so, our lives calmed down and we slept in until noon on Christmas day (who does that?). Since then, we've done a lot of reading and a lot of nothing. I completely disassembled my non-functional camera and am working on my most recent musical project: slow acoustic guitar covers of rage against the machine songs. (I was inspired by the movie I'm Not There and Woody Guthrie's guitar).

and you: how was your christmas?

it's funny, my word was going to be hot, not dirty. but maybe a little of both. when i have equipment that goes on the blink, it ends up in a pile in my house that causes me all manner of depressive anxiety until i can finally pay someone extraordinary amounts of money to look at it and pronounce it dead or fixable for another fee, or it ends up in the landfill. it's yet another way the engineers in my life fill me with excitement and wonder, that you can end up with something that looks like THAT. wow.

:) happy new year to you... wish i could have seen then djangoish band with y'all. xo
