The Times, They Are A' Changin'

this year, due to my new dry lifestyle, a fine holiday tradition will be modified a bit. for the past few years, I've consipired with friends to meet over the holidays at the Brass Rail bar in Port Huron. why oh why would one visit a townie bar (an old man bar, really) in the thumb area of Michigan? Why, because they feature the best hot drinks ever, bar none. Plus it's all warm and cozy and decked out with a million Christmas lights. But what is the delightful warm concoction they serve? It is known as a Tom & Jerry and if you haven't tried one you should do so (if you are so inclined). It is a frothy mixture of brandy/rum, hot water, sugar, and whipped egg whites, often topped off with cinnamon or powdered cocoa--a classic. the temperature of the drink and the fire provided by the liquor gives a one-two stoking of heat in the belly. fortitude for a cold winter's night. the Brass Rail is famous for its many variations on the Tom&Jerry theme, substituting Bailey's for the brandy, for example, and another tasty one known as the Oatmeal Cookie. Not sure what's in it, but it fits its name quite well.

however, this year the tradition will be put on hiatus (for me, anyways). That is, unless they can figure out a "virgin" Tom & Jerry. Perhaps with cocoa and whipped egg whites? Either way, it's all about going and being merry with friends. holiday cheer, without rosy cheeks.
